In The News : ILP Miri to enhance student learning

MIRI: Industrial Training Institute (ILP) Miri will collaborate with various industries to expand and enhance students’ skills to meet the demand for skilled workers in the state.

To meet the demand for skilled workers, ILP will provide training or short courses devoted to specific areas of work and part-time courses (especially for working adults) in addition to the full-time courses, Minister of Communication who is also Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin said.

Lee, who is chairman of the advisory panel of ILP Miri since 2007, said ILP and the Labour Department will hold a briefing session with various industries to enable ILP to establish specific skills training with them.

“We will start with the oil and gas sector, where we will invite related companies from Miri and Bintulu to be present at this briefing later.

“Through this presentation, we hope to create a collaboration to provide specific skills training, short-term and part-time so we can help improve the skills of workers and produce more skilled manpower,” he added.

Through the collaboration will be forged later, ILP will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with these industries, which will conduct training to meet the needs of the respective industry.

Lee, who is also National Youth Skills Institute Miri and Advanced Technology Training Centre (Adtec) Bintulu’s advisory panel chairman told reporters at a press conference after chairing a meeting with members of the ILP advisory panel here yesterday.

Also present at the meeting were the state Department of Labour director August Buma, ILP director Mohd Faizal Tokeran and Adtec director Dr Ramli Rashidi.

ILP has produced 2,160 skilled workers so far this year.

“While for part-time courses, within six months from January to June this year, we have trained 1,588 students.
“All graduates are in high demand in the employment market, especially in the oil and gas industry,” he noted.

ILP Miri holds full-time courses related to computer technology, telecommunication technology, freezer and airconditioning technology, gas pipe installation technology, design technology of industrial products and courses with the Department of Energy (JTM) and Petronas Instep .

ILP Miri’s second intake started on July 8 with 230 full-time students enrolled.
